BUILDING AS SITE

A Design School in Washington Square, New York

Fall 2019 Core III Studio | Instructor: Andrew Holder

A new design school will be built on top of a library on New York University’s campus. The project seeks to question the solemn nature of Bobst library and counter the controversial legacy of its architect and patrons while offering productive spatial qualities for design education.

Concept: blurring between plan and section, the vertical and the horizontal, void and solid.

Dynamic aggregation of void and solid spatial bays that pivot around the central core.

Circulation: pivoting double height spaces creating oblique continuity throughout the building.

Programmatic distribution: the oblique continuity of studio spaces.
